| As a newly appointed employee of creative services at Bank Windhoek, part of my ambition is to change mindsets. Teaching my team to look at life through the eyes of a creative, to question everything and to live life to the fullest. Creatives cannot be creative if they live in the box others expect them to think out of. We don’t have the luxury of living by the moral standards of those we influence every day. We do not have the right to judge others by their standards or lack thereof. If we are expected to come up with a concept to advertise dog meat as food then that is what we do. We do not relay false information. Thats against the law. BUT selling dog meat is exactly that. Food. Who are we as creatives so judge those who sell or eat it. Don’t get me wrong, there is a difference between morality and human right, the abuse of a child or animal, not acceptable. Anything else??….. Bring it on!!!
We as a team change the lives of the consumer. Our ideas come from our understanding of people, not the basic understanding that everyone has, but a deeper understanding. This understanding often leads to our loss of innocence. When you are taught to understand people, to look into their souls, you cannot be selective of what you see. This understanding of consumers is what turns a good creative into a great creative. This is when we create adverts which speak to consumers even though they don’t know it or don’t understand why.
Oh there are many creatives who lack skill and more often than not, there are clients who think they have the creative skill. Then override the creative process with their ignorance. The result, mediocre adverts being placed on TV, radio, billboards and in newspapers. None of them effective.
This leads me to the client. This is the tough one. Understanding the needs of a company and its values is important but making the client understand that everyone has opinions and that they as clients should put their faith in a bunch of crazy non conformists, is nearly impossible….no matter how many awards you have won or how many bottom lines you have moved beyond expectation, they remain skeptics. I mean their kid does finger painting and that is also creative, so what makes us so special?
We are the creators of thought, we change mindsets, we can, with but a few words, make people smile, feel pride, or sadness. We help make lives better…even if only in a capitalist society.
Unfortunately, this all leads to a lack of morality, we as creatives often do what we want without regard for the feelings of others, our inability to just enjoy something without analyzing its creative process or lack thereof, knows no bounds. Oh and an arrogance, don’t get me started on the arrogance of creatives. As creators of emotion through mediums, we do mostly believe we are God’s gift to society.
It is in this light that I hope with age came wisdom. Too often I shook my head as I listened to the advice of the greats, only to do what I wanted anyway. It is only now where I have been placed in a position of trust, that the memories of old pop into my head (mostly to late) and guide me along the path which so many have cleared for me. I do this in the belief that I will not fail the wisdom of my mentors and will make them proud to say “ I know that arrogant, self righteous idiot”
To end off the ramblings of a non conformist, I would like to leave you with the thoughts of two great minds who’s quotes I have embedded into my creative process.
In the words of Albert Einstein: “ the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result”
And in the words of Anais Nin: “We don’t see things as they are, we see things as WE are”

| Song Night, a monthly platform for upcoming singers to perform, started the year off with a bang. I really applaud Lize Ehlers for this great initiative. Namibia has a myriad of talented artists who just need a platform to show-case their lyrically skills. Song Night does not only provide a platform for artists to sing, regular Song Night artists will get a chance to write a song which will be recorded in a compilation CD at the end of the year. Artists like Shishani, Raymond, Shaun and Michael’s soulful, heartfelt and sensuous songs had the audience shouting for more. Catch the next Song Night on 28 March 2012, at the Playhouse Theatre. |

Thousands and thousands and thousands of words words words!
In the beginning we had so many words so much to say So much talk; All night long we could, we would -
Talk That Talk!
Between us there were a million phrases, expression, hyperbole, synonyms, antynoms, syllables. So many letters to put in place, All used to express the love we once shared, Still! All the letters in all the words in all the books in all the world, they- weren't enough! Alas, the words too, they passed And that was all in the beginning In the beginning, in the beginning, in the beginning there was LUST! These lustful thoughts I sowed, they- Grew, matured, progressed and reaped into; Words for you; Words full of love; Words filled with trust; Words turned into promises -
BUT, as we now know, that was all in the beginning!
And now, and now, Now as we approach the end; The promises- they've turned to lies; The silent whispers 'I love you' have turned to painful screams 'I HATE YOU' The lust has become anger!
And still, and still, and still, still as we approach the end, leaving the beginning behind us, your words, They STING;
cut DEEPER as I learn how broad your vocabulary can be stretched and how good your French really is as you Curse me out, tell me I'm worthless, threaten me, use your words to crush my dreams, bring sorrow to my soul and Break my spirit! In the beginning, in the beginning, in the beginning your words, your words, your words - they were that of a man. And now, now as we approach the end, your words, your words they resemble that of a boy yet to mature! In the beginning, in the beginning, in the beginning the words between us, they words between us were Kind and true But now, now your words, your words are hurtful and deceiving through and through! In the beginning, In the beginning, in the beginning there was the word And the word was LOVE And we were those words And the word was with us And so LOVE was with us
And now and now and now, Now all I have left is the beginning and those words And as we stand here at the finish line, I, Hold onto those words, Praying we can go back to what we once were! To go back to those words of love To speak those words of love To feel To be love, YES.
Take my hand and let us journey Back To the beginning!!
